 When is a dental crown needed?

There are several types of crowns. Permanent crowns can be made from stainless steel, all resin, porcelain-fused-to-metal, metal, or all-ceramic/porcelain.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be colour matched to your other teeth. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. One downside is that the crown's porcelain portion can break off. Sometimes the metal underlying the crown's porcelain can show sort of a dark line at the gum side.

Metals such as gold, palladium, nickel or chromium can be used in crowns. Compared with other crown types, with metal crowns less tooth structure needs to be removed. Metal crowns are very strong and last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main downside. And of course the metal crowns are not suitable for people with metal allergies.

Zirconium and All-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match compared to any other crown type. Porcelain is the traditional material used for new crowns. Porcelain crowns are custom-made crowns bonded to your teeth in just two or three visits. They are the perfect restoration when a tooth is severely damaged,decayed or compromised aesthetically.Porcelain crowns can used by a restoration of a single tooth and also as a dental bridge in case of missing a tooth or more teeth. However, all-porcelain may chip or break.

Zirconium also called Zirconia (Cercon) is our material of choice for dental crowns. It is a very strong material which allows light to pass as a normal tooth would do. That gives a natural look, unlike other metal cores that block the light. Zirconium crowns are sometimes called Non-Allergic Crowns because Zirconium is "biocompatible”, meaning that the body does not reject it. Unlike Amalgam fillings and metal alloys, the human body accepts Zirconium as a natural material, so you don’t need to worry about allergies or adverse reactions.
