To fit a porcelain crown, one to two millimeter all around the tooth, as well as the top is removed, while the remaining natural tooth structure is preserved. With the proper care porcelain crowns will last long into the future as they have a very strong structure and look and feel like your own tooth.

What are Porcelain Crowns ? 

Unlike veneers, porcelain crowns cover all surfaces of the tooth and are used only when the tooth is fractured or very broken down. The porcelain used is the same as that used for veneers so they are strong and also offer an aesthetic natural look. Porcelain Crowns are made to improve your overall smile or to blend in with your own teeth.

Porcelain Crowns are also used to support a large filling when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. Sometimes an underlying metal shell is used under the porcelain if additional strength is needed.

General Definition: A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant and is typically bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Crowns can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated using out-of-mouth methods. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. Full-porcelain ( ceramic ) dental materials include porcelain, ceramic or glasslike fillings and crowns ( a.k.a jacket crown, as a metal free option ).

What to Expect After You Have Your Porcelain Crown?

Right after your new crown is cemented, you may experience some sensitivity to cold. This is normal because the tooth and the surrounding area might be slightly irritated during the procedure. You might also feel that your bite is off in the first couple of days. If the “off” feeling still persists after that, it might require a slight adjustment.

It is very important that you maintain excellent oral hygiene with your new crown or bridge. A crowned tooth might give you the wrong impression that it won’t decay like your natural teeth, but it is still susceptible to decay near the gumline. You should continue to brush and floss as normal.

Porcelain crowns are strong and durable but they still have potential to fracture the same as a natural tooth. Avoid doing anything with a crown or bridge that could damage a natural tooth. Do not chew ice as extreme temperature change increases the fracture of crowns and natural teeth.

Procedures

 

  • Consultation and X-Ray.
  • Preparation of the tooth by removing a small amount of tooth structure.
  • Taking an impression of your tooth. This is done by a mold filled with dental putty which you will be asked to bite into. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where your crown will be fabricated. This might take a few days. Your dentist will let you know the exact day after taking your impression.
  • Placement of a temporary crown until your porcelain crown is ready.
  • Fitting and bonding of your permanent crown when it is ready. Your dentist will give it a final clean and polish.
